DEAR FRIENDS,
I'm writing not actually "from the podium" this month, but from a small town in Victoria, Australia, 200 km north of Melbourne. It's winter, and a stark contrast from the humidity of Miami we experienced just a few short weeks ago!

I'm here working on the choral arrangements for Pantheon Bar & Grill - a folk-rock peace cantata by renowned composer, Steve Schalchlin. Rehearsals for this new work begin at the end of the month, and the premiere will be at Davies Symphony Hall on Monday, December 1 as part of SFGMC's 30th Anniversary Concert. Those of you who were at Davies in May heard a sneak preview - the concert finale, "My Rising Up," was a movement from Pantheon. I'll be telling you more about this inspiring music in the months ahead.
Right now, the chorus is gearing up for its third annual Catered By The Chorus fund raiser. I'm hosting a dinner at AsiaSF on Wednesday, August 20. As I write this there are only 4 seats left, so don't miss out on this chance to spend a couple of hours with me in close-quarters! And of course I'll be at the Crescendo party on Saturday, August 23rd. If you've never been to the Palace Hotel, it's a real treat. The chorus sang there for the first time in May for the Academy of Gospel Music Awards, and we fell in love with the space.
The entertainment at Crescendo will be a real treat, too. Making her SFGMC-event debut, emcee and performer Terese Genecco is incredible. Her music spans many styles; the first time I heard her, she performed everything from jazz standards to pop classics. She's a great entertainer and her show has been described as "Frisky, retro fun!" Also on the entertainment bill are Dixieland Dykes + 3 (the "3" are the guys in the group!), and glam/electro/pop band, Ejector. Led by SFGMC alumnus Ben Holder, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised when I visited the band's MySpace page and listened to some of their music. I thought, "Wow, I actually like this!" I'm sure you will, too.
I look forward to seeing you at the end of the month at this great event. For tickets, visit: http://www.sfgmc.org/
Cheers,
Kathleen
